Birchwood—affectionately known by locals as the “Wood Hood”—is one of those neighborhoods that quietly grows on you. You know you’ve arrived when you cross the Rainbow Bridge on Northwest Avenue, just over Squalicum Parkway. From there, the vibe shifts. Birchwood is established, unflashy, and genuinely neighborly. It’s calm without feeling sleepy, and it’s become one of the more sought-after neighborhoods in Bellingham for people who value space, character, and community.

Where Birchwood Is Located
Birchwood sits just south of the Cordata neighborhood in northwest Bellingham. It’s bordered by I-5 on the northeast edge, which makes heading north or south refreshingly easy. Meridian Street is also close by, putting everyday errands within quick reach—think Walmart, Target, and Bellis Fair Mall without a long drive.
Downtown Bellingham is typically about 10 minutes away, and while traffic can be moderate, it’s a very manageable commute compared to many other parts of the city.
Local Restaurants I Actually Go To
One of the things I love most about Birchwood is its food scene—especially the locally owned spots that people truly frequent.
- Netos is a neighborhood staple and one of my go-to places for Mexican food. It’s affordable, consistently delicious, and they also sell Mexican baked goods and specialty items you won’t find elsewhere.
- Wanida Thai Bistro opened its second location along Northwest Avenue, and it’s been a fantastic addition to the area. It’s another regular stop for me and a welcome expansion of Bellingham’s dining options.
Homes, Lots, and That Semi-Rural Feel

Birchwood stands out because of its lot sizes. It’s one of the few Bellingham neighborhoods where you can still find larger parcels with single-family homes. Most homes here were built between the 1940s and the 1970s, and many are single-level ramblers—something that’s surprisingly hard to find in Bellingham’s hillier neighborhoods.

Some properties have enough land for serious gardening or even small hobby farms. It’s not unusual to see chickens—and yes, even goats—around the neighborhood. That blend of city convenience with a slightly rural feel is a big part of Birchwood’s appeal.

A Neighborhood That’s Changed—In a Good Way
Long-time Bellingham residents sometimes tell me that Birchwood used to be considered the “less desirable” neighborhood—the place you went for more affordable homes. That reputation no longer fits. As buyers have started prioritizing lot size, usable land, and single-level living, Birchwood has become increasingly desirable.
It’s still more affordable than many other parts of Bellingham, but demand has absolutely grown. Streets here are narrower than newer developments like Cordata, and sidewalks exist but aren’t consistent throughout the neighborhood—which adds to the older, more organic feel of the area.
Parks Near Birchwood
Birchwood is surrounded by some truly great parks, and this is another reason people love living here.
- Birchwood Park
A large neighborhood park with picnic shelters, playgrounds, basketball courts, benches, and a big multi-purpose field.

- Little Squalicum Park
One of my personal favorites. It’s a beach park where dogs are allowed off leash, so you’ll often see happy dogs sprinting into the water after sticks.

- Squalicum Pier
Recently opened and absolutely beautiful—a peaceful walk out into the bay that feels like a hidden gem.

- Squalicum Creek Park
A large park with a fantastic playground, multi-use fields, and two separate off-leash dog areas (one for small dogs, one for large). There’s also plenty of parking, which is a bonus.
Schools and Education
Birchwood is served by Bellingham Public Schools, including:
The neighborhood is also home to Bellingham Technical College, adding an educational and employment anchor to the area.
Birchwood isn’t flashy—and that’s exactly the point. It’s grounded, practical, and quietly special. Larger lots, mature neighborhoods, great parks, and easy access to everything Bellingham has to offer make it a place people fall in love with slowly—and then never want to leave.
