Summer in Bellingham is what dreams are made of, and what people brag about when they mention where they live. There is so much to do in the summertime here in Bellingham that it is a virtual playground for people of all ages. The only thing difficult about living in Bellingham over the summer is going to work every day, so if you are retired or a child you have it made! The PNW might have a reputation of being a rainy, dreary place with no sunshine. It earns this reputation in the late Fall and winter months, but the summers are glorious. What can you expect from the summer if you live in Bellingham or the surrounding area? A wonderful experience. Continue reading for some of the highlights.
Sunshine for DAYS
When you move to the PNW , especially from a sunny place like Arizona, people will warn you of the lack of sun. Lack of sun leads to Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD for some people. The lack of sun in the winter leads to depression, and must be combated with a light box and extra vitamin D. In the summer, this is not necessary. The skies are blue and you can go weeks without seeing rain.
It feels wrong in a way for it to be as bright and sunny as it is here. On the other hand, it feels so right to have your skin warmed by the sun and to see all of the beautiful summer flowers blooming everywhere. I don’t know if it is climate change, or the summers I have spent here have just been exceptional, but there is no shortage of sunshine here in the summer.
LOOOOONG Days
Summer days go on forever, which is necessary for you to get everything you want to do in the summer months done. Nice days here people are obsessed with getting outside and enjoying the weather. In the summer when it is beautiful every day it is wonderful having the long days so after work you can hit Downtown Sounds or take a walk along Taylor Dock and watch the sunset…after 9pm.
The Shade
The end of July, and most of August can actually get hot. Take that with a grain of salt, because hot is relative, but for this Arizona transplant there are a couple of weeks where I wish I had air conditioning every summer. This summer, summer of 2019 I would say there were 4 weeks where I wish I had air conditioning. My car doesn’t have air conditioning, and neither does my home. Unlike Arizona though, the shade here provides almost complete relief from the heat, it is wonderful. A fan in my bedroom by an open window cools my home enough to sleep as well.
Swimming in the Summer
Summer in Bellingham is all about being outside, which makes swimming outside something everyone wants to do. Luckily there are all sorts of options for this. Lake Whatcom is a favorite. Bloedel Donovan is a gorgeous park that reminds me of the painting “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte”. Maybe people aren’t in high top hats and full length dresses, but the scene is usually almost as beautiful and peaceful. There is also swimming in the bay either from Boulevard Park, Marine Park, or Larabee State Park, Clayton Beach.
