Local business, local people
On our quest to showcase locally owned businesses and restaurants, Stacie and I stopped by the Henhouse Cafe in Gilbert Arizona. I wanted to speak with the owners, so we went to the first one on the northeast corner of Higley and Guadalupe.
My first impression that it was CROWDED at 11am on a Wednesday. We were trying to hit them up when they were less busy so they could spend some time speaking with us. The atmosphere was cozy and warm, and it had a comfortable country feel. Looking at the menu I could have ordered about ten different items and been thrilled, but I went with the California Benedict, and Stacie got a veggie omelette with yams.
Gilbert Residents, Family business
We spoke with Brett Grebe, the owner, and met his wife Maureen Grebe (who from her husband’s account is the heart and soul of the restaurant). Brett and Maureen faced the same thing many of us did in the economic crash, and owned a bar looking for a better situation, but Maureen started serving breakfast next door…which quickly became more successful than the bar. The restaurant was opened in Gilbert in 2012…staffed by Maureen and Brett, and three of their children. It has grown since then, and they opened a second restaurant of the same name off Lindsay and Pecos in 2015. They work hard and are at the restaurants every day when they aren’t traveling. They serve food bought locally, and prepared on site. Support your Gilbert neighbors and stop in, you won’t be sorry!
